Before entering the real estate industry officially, I spent more than 15 years as a communication consultant helping government agencies make complex information clear and usable. I believe clear communication is a consumer right.
As part of my communication consultant work, I worked with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on the "Know Before You Owe" project to design new mortgage disclosures --the Loan Estimate (formerly the Good Faith Estimate) and the Closing Disclosure (formerly the HUD-1).
The Loan Estimate (LE) is intended to be used as a shopping tool to help you choose a mortgage that is right for you. The Closing Disclosure (CD) is intended to help you understand what, if anything, changed between your loan estimate and closing. This is good news for consumers as consumers can better use, compare, and understand complex mortgage information and terms with these disclosures.
